About the subject

The RF acoustic filter patent landscape is undergoing some significant changes! With the rise of 5G providing filters operating at higher frequencies and exhibiting large bandwidths is becoming key. Both acoustic filter technologies — surface acoustic wave (SAW) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) — must fulfill this new requirement to unlock the full potential of 5G. The use of ScAlN and thin film SAW appear as best candidate, but a fierce race to protect these technologies is running. Recently, historical IP leaders have been more and more challenged by Chinese newcomers and have started to adopt new IP and R&D strategies to settled and strengthened their position.

For more than 7 years, KnowMade has been following the activity related to acoustic wave filter (AWF) and witnessed how 5G has impacted it. With more than 990 new inventions published in 2022 by more than 190 patent applicants, the acoustic wave filter IP landscape is the most active and competitive segment of the RF front-end module IP landscape in the last year.
