About the subject

Imaging radar has rapidly evolved into a critical technology for autonomous systems, with patent activity accelerating significantly over the past decade. From 2015 to 2024, global imaging radar patent publications increased more than tenfold, fueled by the rise of autonomous driving, 4D radar integration, AI-based perception, and sensor fusion. This surge has created an intensely competitive IP landscape, where established OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers are being challenged by new entrants and radar-focused innovators.
In this context, patent landscape analysis provides a powerful complement to market studies, offering deeper insights into global dynamics, IP strategies, and emerging innovation hotspots. It reveals who the leading patent owners are, how their portfolios have evolved over time, and where newcomers are disrupting the field.
Based on our monitoring of imaging radar-related patent activities, this study explores major IP trends by country, the timeline of key players, and segmentation across six application domains (terrestrial, aerial, robotics, space, marine, defense) and five technology layers comprising eleven techniques (FMCW, MIMO, Beamforming, 4D imaging radar, SAR, ISAR, calibration, point cloud, SLAM, tracking, AI and sensor fusion). Particular attention is given to terrestrial applications, including ADAS and higher levels of autonomy, where intensifying competition and strategic IP positioning are defining the evolution of automotive radar.
