SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS, France – July 31, 2025 │KnowMade is pleased to announce the release of its Q2 2025 GaN Electronics Patent Monitor. This comprehensive report delivers essential insights into the dynamic landscape of GaN-related patents, with a particular focus on power electronics. Featuring a thorough analysis of patent filings, grants, and intellectual property (IP) activities from the past quarter, it serves as an indispensable resource for industry stakeholders.
Global IP Landscape in GaN Electronics
During the second quarter of 2025, the GaN IP landscape saw significant activity with the emergence of 645 new patent families. Notably, Infineon and BOE have accelerated their patent filings, with BOE ramping up its IP activity significantly in the GaN electronics patent environment. Xidian University maintains its lead in patenting activity, nearly doubling its invention disclosures compared to Q1 2025. Meanwhile, ST and Innoscience showed consistent patenting efforts, placing them among the top 7 applicants.
Over 320 new patent families were granted, reflecting Innoscience’s strengthened IP position in power GaN. Innoscience is capitalizing on its persistent innovative efforts, notably securing Chinese patents and pioneering US patents for integrated circuits and advanced HEMT devices. UMC, a Taiwanese foundry, also gained recognition with numerous newly granted inventions. In contrast, more than 220 patents expired or were abandoned this quarter, significantly impacting companies like Wolfspeed and Infineon.
Patent Transfers and Collaborations
Highlighting a quarter of dynamic patent transfers, over 90 transfers were recorded, reshaping the RF GaN landscape. Notably, Wolfspeed continued transferring its RF GaN IP assets to Macom following a previous business sale. SpaceX acquired all IP assets from Akoustis Technologies after its bankruptcy, as reported by KnowMade in Q2 2025 RF Front-End Modules & Components Patent Monitor, while Axiro Semiconductor advanced its position with acquisitions from Renesas.
Collaborative IP efforts were prominent, with about 20 significant collaborations noted. This includes Cornell University’s joint filing with IHPP PAS and the US Navy’s initiatives with domestic universities. These alliances reflect a strong foundation for future technological advancements in GaN electronics.
