Intellectual Property Landscape

Q2 2025 marked a significant period for solid-state battery technology, with over 1,510 new patent applications published. Leading patent applicants included industry giants such as LG Energy Solution, Samsung, Toyota, and Chongqing Tailan New Energy. Meanwhile, 490 patent families were granted for the first time, with main players like Toyota, LG Energy Solution, Samsung, Panasonic/Sanyo, CATL, and Yili New Energy Technology leading the charge. On the downside, 50 patents expired or were abandoned , reflecting the dynamic and evolving nature of this technological field.

Key Players and Notable Innovations

Prominent entities such as Toyota, Samsung, LG Energy Solution, and CATL continue to consolidate their intellectual property positions, demonstrating sustained innovation and investment in solid-state technology. In contrast, Panasonic/Sanyoshowed a decrease in activity, with only 7 new patent families published this quarter compared to an average of 14 per quarter last year.

In an exciting development, patent landscape welcomed over 180 newcomers this quarter, predominantly from China, who published their first solid-state battery-related patent applications. Among them, two notable South-Korean start-ups founded in 2022 (Solitact and Kairos) entered the solid-state battery patent landscape this quarter. Solitact published 4 new patent families related to all-solid-state Li-ion batteries with Lithium metal electrodes or polymer/inorganic solid electrolytes. Unfortunately, the company appears to have ceased operations in July 2024. Kairos (kairosanode.com) published 2 new patent families focused on garnet-based solid electrolytes containing amorphous ceramic.
