Solid-State Battery Patent Trends in Q1 2025

SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS, France – May 28, 2025 │ The solid-state battery market continues to flourish, fueled by growing demand for high-performance, safer energy storage solutions. In the first quarter of 2025, patent activity for solid-state batteries remained dynamic, with leading companies reinforcing their IP positions and more than a hundred new players entering the field. Below, we present our analysis of the latest patent landscape overview, highlight key players and their strategic maneuvers, and offer insights for organizations seeking to navigate this evolving industry. Our Solid-state battery monitor service is designed to deliver timely and actionable intelligence tailored to the specific needs of businesses and researchers alike.

Notable IP newcomers in Q1 25 within the Li-ion solid-state battery patent landscape on a map.

Figure 1: Our expert identifies more than 180 newcomers this first quarter of 2025 (i.e., first patent application related to Li-ion solid-state battery published in Q1 2025).

Global IP Situation for Q1 2025

During Q1 2025, over 1,390 new patent applications related to solid-state batteries were published, illustrating sustained growth in R&D across the sector. LG Energy Solution, Samsung, Geely, Toyota, Nissan, Panasonic, Envision, CATL, SAIC, and Hyundai/Kia emerged as the most active patent applicants. In parallel, more than 440 patents were granted, primarily to Toyota, Panasonic, LG Energy Solution, Samsung, Honda, and Murata Manufacturing.

While over 40 patents also became inactive—either lapsed or expired—there were no new patent litigation cases in this quarter. Significantly, IP transfers have become part of broader strategic moves, exemplified by Volkswagen transferring over 20 solid-state battery patent families to PowerCo, its wholly-owned subsidiary. Founded in 2022, PowerCo focuses on the development and large-scale production of advanced batteries for the Volkswagen EV lineup.

Key Players and Noteworthy Patents

Not surprisingly, established IP leaders in solid-state battery technologies are strengthening their positions. Notable companies like Toyota and Panasonic continue to expand their patent coverage, while LG Energy Solution and CATL consolidate and enhance their portfolios. This quarter also underscored the rise of more than 180 new entrants in the IP landscape, mostly from China. Of particular interest, a handful of non-Chinese start-ups—including Adden Energy, Theion, Tyfast, CNP Solutions, Volt14 Solutions, Antora Energy, 2D Innovation, and Solitact—have published patents, hinting at their ambitions in a fiercely competitive field.

Another prominent development this quarter is the strong presence of automotive heavyweights leading the patent surge—Geely, Toyota, Nissan, SAIC, and Hyundai/Kia, among others—driving forward the next generation of EV battery technology. This wave underscores their determination to revolutionize electric mobility, from performance enhancements to manufacturing scalability, reflecting how fiercely these industry leaders are competing to shape the future of transportation.
