Tracking the Innovation Race: Q1 2025 Patent Insights on Silicon Anode Li-ion Battery

SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS, France – April 28, 2025 │Silicon anode technology is becoming a major focus for improving Li-ion batteries. As research and development speed up worldwide, KnowMade’s Silicon Anode Li-ion Batteries Patent Monitoring Service helps you keep track of the latest innovations and key industry players.

Q1 2025 Patent Activity Highlights Global Efforts to Industrialize Silicon Anodes

The Q1 2025 data highlights strong and diversified innovation activity around silicon anode Li-ion batteries technology, with over 1,150 new patent families (inventions) published. More than 430 new inventions relate to anode materials, confirming ongoing efforts to overcome silicon’s intrinsic limitations such as volume expansion and cycling instability. The main patent applicants that stand out in this first quarter of 2025 for this segment are Shanshan, Samsung, and LG Energy Solution (LGES). Notably, substantial innovations are also observed in battery cells and other key components like electrolytes and binders (Figure 1), underlining a system-level approach to integration. This widespread R&D activity reflects the strategic importance of silicon anodes in next-generation energy storage solutions, as stakeholders aim to boost energy density while ensuring performance and manufacturability. Samsung and LG Energy Solution show a strong presence across multiple value chain segments, reflecting integrated innovation strategies. Hyundai-Kia, primarily known as a global vehicle manufacturer, appears, for example, among the patent holders in the anode segment. This demonstrates the growing strategic importance of upstream battery technologies for vehicle manufacturers.

New Patent Filings Target Key Challenges in Silicon Anode Materials

Identifying recent patent filings from key players underscores the growing innovation efforts in silicon-based material development for silicon anode Li-ion battery anodes. For instance, recent patent publications from Shanshan and LG Energy Solution relate to advanced silicon-carbon composite materials designed to overcome critical challenges such as volume expansion and structural degradation (Figure 2). Shanshan has developed a core-shell structure combining porous silicon and carbon layers to enhance structural stability and electrochemical performances. In parallel, LG Energy Solution is working on a graphite-coated silicon-based composite with integrated conductive materials to mitigate excessive solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and improve cycle life. These technical developments reflect the race to make silicon anodes viable for high-performance battery applications.
